Each can contains 15 ounces of delicious New England-style Clam Chowder, a New England tradition and staple. Our recipe has been fine-tuned over generations, passed down from mother to daughter, father to son. The New England variety of chowder, or "chowdah" as we say in Boston, contains no tomatoes. In fact, in 1939 a bill was introduced to a New England state legislature making it a statutory and culinary offense to add tomatoes to the traditional chowder recipe. The word "chowder" may come from the French "chaudiere", a large 3- legged iron cooking pot that was often used to make the soup. Or it may originate with the 16th century English word "jowter", which means fishmonger.
